You must have already heard of this place in many tourist places, and as the name suggests, Devprayag Sangam is the birthplace of the river Ganga and is the last and most sacred of the Panch Prayag (five confluences). It is the location where geography and religion converge. It is here, at the spot that is called the Devprayag Sangam, that the two sacred rivers of the Himalayas, the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda, embrace each other, and here, in fact, adopt as her own name that of the Ganga River.

Confluence of the Alaknanda River and the Bhagirathi

This is an experience of being at the point of witnessing a transformation. The rivers come to the scene with different colors, speeds, and energies, which are their high-altitude sources. The Bhagirathi is a stream originating in the Gangotri region and having a rapid and clear flow; the Alaknanda is a stream originating in the Badrinath region, and its flow is often darker or a bit muddy in color.

When they intermingle, they do not intermix; they become one body, with all the spiritual essence of the mountains towards the plains. Because of its strong energy core—which is also thought to be among the strongest in the globe—sages from all over the world were able to practice deep meditation and spirituality (Dhyana) here, making it a popular destination for yoga and meditation.

So if you are someone who is looking for a peaceful hike or are a spiritual tourist, hiker, or just a yogi visiting our Himalayan Yoga and Hiking Retreat, we will recommend you to visit Devprayag Sangam, as it is a key experience of calm and power.

Where is Devprayag located?

The ancient town of Devprayag is located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. Built on the steep slopes where the mountains start breaking down into the low Himalayas, it is situated at an altitude of roughly 830 meters (2,723 feet). It is a very important station on the old pilgrimage way.

The geographical prominence of Devprayag is all in the confluence of two source rivers:

  • Bhagirathi River (Ganga, Mother of the Ganga): This river is widely referred to as the Grandmother of the Ganga. It is formed quite high on the Gangotri glacier and has long been attributed to the philosopher Bhagiratha, who undoubtedly is the reason behind the coming of the river to the surface of the earth. It is generally rough and quick.
  • Alaknanda River (flowing down at Badrinath): The second river making the Sangam is this, as it flows down from the glaciers of the sacred temple of Badrinath. It is usually more voluminous and more intense and turbulent, and can look darker in color.

The beautiful contrast between the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda at the Sangam can be readily identified and is symbolic of the coming together of two very divergent and, at the same time, compelling powers.

Why is Devprayag So Famous?

There are many reasons behind the popularity of Devprayag Sangam, as it is not only famous for its gorgeous site; it is also encircled by its rich history and spiritual meaning with great spiritual energy, which makes it a great attraction to pilgrims, travelers, and those who want to find inner peace.

It is mainly because of the Official Birthplace of the Ganga. This is where the spiritual identity of the Ganga actually starts, and this makes the site extremely sacred. Dipping in the confluence supposedly cleanses sins and merits spiritual merit (Punya).

  • A Place of Prehistoric Reflection: The tales state that after the battle with Ravana, Lord Rama performed penance here. This setting makes Devprayag a perfect place to meditate. The consistent and overwhelming sound of the flowing water will assist in putting the mind into a quiet state and focusing on the present moment, which is the main advantage of every yoga student.
  • A Hub of History: The town has been the historic residence of the ‘Prayagwals,’ families who have maintained well-ordered records (genealogical registers) of the pilgrims going to the high shrines since time immemorial. This renders it an animated library of Himalayan travelling history.

Famous Temples in Devprayag

The town has its spiritual energy in the form of ancient temples, which are also a must-visit place for any visitor.

1. Raghunath Temple

It is the best-known and most significant temple of Devprayag. It is devoted to Lord Rama and is thought to be thousands of years old. It is constructed in a distinctive Dravidian (South Indian) style, which does not fit typical styles in this region, and which means that this temple might be historically related to the spiritual traditions of the whole of India. The temple is only next to the River Ganga; consequently, the setting is very quiet and can be used to concentrate and worship in silence.

2. Chandrabadani Temple

This age-old temple is located within a 10 km range of the Devprayag sangam and is a great attraction for pilgrims as well. This beautiful temple is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Sati and is situated on the hilltop near Devprayag, which is thought to be one of the great Shakti Peeths all. Although it is not located directly in the town, it is an important destination for hiking tourists. To access it, one has to climb a refreshing and spiritual path that will compensate you with spectacular mountain scenery. This is the exact place where the spiritual searching of the pilgrim is mixed with the physical struggle needed to have a great hiking experience.
